Hot and Steamy – What to Do?

Travelling in a caravan across Australia is a dream for many, however, the summer heat can make it difficult to stay cool and comfortable. With temperatures soaring anything up to 40 degrees Celsius or higher, it is essential to take measures to keep your caravan cool during hot days. Here are some tips and strategies from the brains trust at the Facebook Group: Everything Caravan and Camping.  These tips and strategies will help you stay cool and safe whilst on your Australian caravan adventures.

  1. Use reflective windscreen covers cut to the size on your windows.  This is one of the most effective ways to keep your caravan cool. The covers reflect sunlight and heat away from your caravan, preventing it from turning into a greenhouse. You can purchase pre-made windscreen covers or make your own using reflective material or foil.
  2. Park in a shaded area.  However, this might not be optimal if you have solar and want to take advantage of the sun charging up your solar panels. When parking your caravan, look for a spot with natural shade, if you prefer to do this.
  3. Set up an awning or canopy. This will provide you with additional shade whilst helping to reduce the temperature to some inside sections of the caravan.
  4. Create a double awning with extension shade.  Use the caravan awning and install a second sail track to thread another tarp over. Leave about a 6” gap between the two for airflow.
  5. Ventilate your caravan. Proper ventilation is essential to keep your caravan cool. Open your windows and roof vents to allow hot air to escape and cool air to circulate throughout your caravan. Naturally whilst travelling on dirt roads, ensure you keep your vents closed to avoid dust entering your caravan.
  6. What you can also do is on very hot days, close the windows and vents (except the top vent) and turn on the air conditioner.  As the hot air rises the air conditioner will cool the air.  After approximately half an hour ensure you close the top vent to keep the whole caravan cool.
  7. Ensure filters for air conditioner are washed & cleaned. This will help the air conditioner to be more efficient.
  8. Hose down the top and side of the caravan.  Only if water is available.  Do this for approximately 2 minutes.  This will help to quickly cool the caravan.
  9. Use a fan: Many seasoned travellers use a fan or two placed strategically in the van to help fan the cool air from the air conditioner.  This is a good way to quickly cool down the caravan.
  10. Aluminium Foam.  Place aluminium foam (from Kmart) on top of cupboards, especially cupboards holding food and medications.  This will assist the cupboards to remain cool and ensure your medications are good to take.
  11. Close doors to the bathroom area.  Again this will help retain cool air in the caravan.
  12. Keep your caravan well-insulated.  Good insulation helps to keep the cool air inside your caravan and prevents hot air from entering. Check for any drafts or leaks and seal them.
  13. Use light-coloured fabrics. Dark colours absorb heat, so using light-coloured fabrics for your curtains and upholstery can help to reflect heat away from your caravan. This can make a significant difference to the temperature inside your caravan.
  14. Stay hydrated: Staying hydrated is crucial during hot days. Ensure you drink plenty of water whilst avoiding alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you. If you’re travelling in a remote area, make sure to carry enough water with you.
  15. Avoid cooking during the hottest parts of the day. Cooking on a stove or in an oven generates heat. Try to prepare meals during the cooler parts of the day or cook outside on a gas grill. This can help to reduce the temperature inside your caravan and make it more comfortable to stay in.
  16. To keep the fridge running cool on very hot days, drape a wet bath towel over the fridge vent.  This will help keep your food and liquids chilled till the main heat of the day passes.

In conclusion: Travelling in a caravan across Australia during the summer can be challenging. By taking some simple measures, you can stay cool and comfortable. Use reflective windscreen covers on your windows; keep your caravan well-insulated; use light-coloured fabrics; stay hydrated; and avoid cooking during the hottest parts of the day.

Happy Travels.
