Smelly grey water tanks and pipes are no fun when travelling in a caravan or motorhome. Whilst emptying your grey water tank regularly will assist, what do you do when the odours persist. Here are a few strategies mentioned by seasoned travellers to combat smelly grey water pipes.
- Clean your grey water pipes regularly to prevent any buildup of organic matter or residue that can cause odours. One very cheap method to clean your grey water pipe/s (whether at home or in your caravan or motorhome) is to boil an electric jug of water with a cut up lemon (you can leave the rind on). Then pour the boiled water down the drainpipe. Place the remainder of the lemon rind from the boiled jug onto the drain opening and pour 2 jugs of plain boiled water down the drainpipe. This will leave your drain with a lovely lemon fragrance. Please ensure you boil the electric jug at least a further 2 times with plain water so as not to have lemon tea or coffee when next used.
- Run hot water through the grey water pipes periodically to flush out any accumulated debris. Hot water helps in removing grease and soap scum that can contribute to unpleasant odours. However, this strategy may not be possible if living in a caravan or motorhome, hence, other strategies might be more cost effective without using a lot of water.
- Add a natural cleaner to your grey water system to help eliminate odours. For example, you can use a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda. Pour a cup of vinegar followed by a cup of baking soda (dissolved in hot water) down the drain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then flush the pipes with hot water. This can help break down organic matter and neutralize odours. (Please note: if you do not dissolve the baking soda you run the risk of the baking soda hardening and clogging your drainpipe.)
- Another strategy is to pour a 2litre bottle of white vinegar into your half empty grey water tank prior to driving – approximately every 2-3 weeks. Once at or near your destination empty the tank.
- Be mindful of what you dispose of in your grey water system. Avoid dumping substances like grease, oil, food particles, and harsh chemicals down the drain wherever possible These can accumulate and cause foul smells over time.
- To avoid dumping oil or food particles into the grey water drain (if living in your caravan or motorhome) wipe your dishes with paper towels to get the food or grease substances off the plates and pans (and place these towels in a wood fire). Alternatively, you can wash your dishes in a tub of hot soapy water in the sink and then get rid of the washing up water.
- Ensure that your grey water system is well-maintained. Check for any leaks, clogs, or damaged pipes and repair them promptly. Stagnant water can lead to odours, so make sure there is proper ventilation to promote air circulation.
- Some people pour bleach down their grey water pipe, however, be careful. If the pipe is metal the bleach can over time erode the pipe and cause leaks.
- Consider using odour absorbers or natural deodorizers to keep the air fresh around your grey water pipes. You can place dissolved baking soda or activated charcoal near the drains to absorb odours.
- Dissolve 2 Milton Antibacterial tablets in water and pour down the greywater pipe on a regular basis to prevent odours.
- Install a Hepvo valve and/or S Bends on your grey water tank and pipes to prevent the odours coming up your drain people. You can purchase the valve from any Bunnings Store.
- You may want to try (if none of the above does the job to your satisfaction) pouring a bottle of Detol down the grey water pipe.
- Another option is to use the 4 in 1 Eco Traveller not only for your grey water pipe but also for cleaning the bathroom and toilet areas. You can also add the Eco Traveller to your greywater tank prior to driving and then flush the tank when you have arrived at your destination.
- Ensure you empty your grey water tank at appropriate dump points on arrival and prior to leaving for your next destination.
- Professional Inspection: If you have tried the above steps and the odour persists, it may be beneficial to have a professional plumber inspect your grey water system. They can identify any underlying issues and provide appropriate solutions.
Remember to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when working with pipes and plumbing systems. Also the requirements of various parks and free or paid camping sites. Dump points have been created for a reason. Please use them.
